The honest version: satin is not useless. It reduces friction and it is cheap, and if you only wear a bonnet occasionally it is a reasonable buy. What it cannot do is breathe. Gather your hair loosely on top of your head and secure it with a silk scrunchie rather than an elastic. Tip your head forward, place the bonnet over the crown, and draw the elasticated edge back to your hairline. Tuck in any loose lengths. It should feel secure without pulling at your edges. If it marks your hairline, it is too tight.

How do I put a silk bonnet on?
Gather your hair loosely on top of your head, the pineapple method, secured with a silk scrunchie rather than an elastic. Tip your head forward, place the bonnet over the crown, then draw the elasticated edge back to your hairline. Tuck any loose lengths inside. It should sit snugly without pulling at your edges.
Will it stay on all night?
It should. If yours slides off, the usual causes are hair left loose rather than gathered, or the bonnet sitting too far back on the crown. Bring the elasticated edge forward to the hairline and secure hair in a loose pineapple first. Very short or very slippery hair may need a scrunchie underneath.
Can I wear a bonnet on wet hair?
On damp hair, yes, though it will take longer to dry and you may wake with the shape flattened. On soaking hair, no. Trapped moisture against the scalp overnight is not good for hair or skin. Towel-dry to damp first.
Do I need a bonnet if I already have a silk pillowcase?
They do different jobs. A pillowcase protects whatever touches it; a bonnet protects all of your hair regardless of how you move in the night. If you have curls, braids or a style you want to preserve, the bonnet does more. If you want the skin benefits too, the pillowcase does more. Many people use both.
Can a bonnet cause hair loss?
Not if it fits properly. Traction problems come from tension, so a bonnet should never pull at your hairline or leave a mark. Ours uses a soft elasticated band designed to hold without gripping. If any bonnet feels tight at the edges, it is the wrong size.
How do I tell whether the bonnet I already own is real silk?
Three checks. Look for a stated momme weight; polyester never has one. Real silk feels cool at first touch and warms to your skin; polyester stays the same temperature. And real silk at bonnet size is very rarely under £25. If a listing says satin without naming a fibre, assume polyester.
How often should I wash a silk bonnet?
Every one to two weeks. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle or silk detergent, or use a mesh bag at 30°C. No fabric softener, no wringing, no tumble drying. Dry flat away from direct heat.
